Connor’s never really had a place to belong. It was like he was drifting aimlessly from place to place, meeting people who would barely remember him.
That's why he was so surprised when Techno invited him to join the Syndicate.
Techno hadn’t treated Connor with kindness in the past—no, he treated Connor terribly, and Connor was still recovering from the trauma. But despite this — perhaps it was the desire for any kind of place to call home — Connor accepted the offer without hesitation.
It was odd when he thought about it, but there he was, sitting in the Syndicate meeting room with the other four, enjoying their presence. Feeling like he was home, for once in his life.
Blanket awkwardly draped around him, his body was pressed close to Techno’s for warmth as he listened to Phil tell a story from long ago he wasn’t really paying attention to.
Apollo crawled up in his lap and licked his face, his tail wagging happily. Connor groaned and reached to wipe his face off, but still, he scratched the dog’s head, smiling softly.
He had finally found a place where he could actually feel safe and happy. Somewhere where his life didn’t feel so empty.
“I’m making hot chocolate, guys!” Niki called from the other room. Connor’s ears perked up. Hot chocolate sounded good right about now.
Ranboo excused himself to go help her in the kitchen, making Phil huff at him in irritation. Techno laughed from beside Connor.
“Don’t worry, Phil, he’ll be back in a few minutes,” he said.
“Not like he was listening anyway,” Phil grumbled, stretching his wings a little. He sat slightly more upright, while his posture relaxed and extended further.
“Ranboo!” Niki shouted from the kitchen. Her tone was sharp but had a playful edge.
“Sorry!” Ranboo responded quickly.
“Oh god,” Phil said. “I wonder what mess he’s made in there.”
Connor chuckled quietly under his breath, his fingers tracing over Apollo’s fur. His eyes slipped shut, and he leaned on Techno’s shoulder, humming softly.
Moments later, Niki and Ranboo emerged from the kitchen holding cups of hot chocolate.
“Here you go, everybody!” Niki handed each of them a mug.
“Thanks, Niki.” Connor smiled brightly, taking the drink with both hands.
“Want some marshmallows, Connor?” Ranboo asked, awkwardly trying to open the marshmallow bag.
Niki took the bag from him. “You're gonna make a mess, Ranboo.” She said, giving him the bag back after she had opened it.
“Well… Right, like I was saying…” Ranboo huffed. “Connor, do you want some?”
Connor nodded, and Ranboo dropped some marshmallows in his mug with a friendly smile.
“Thank you,” Connor replied quietly, taking a sip from his mug.
Ranboo set the bag down on the table and sat back down next to Phil.
Niki seated herself beside Connor, smiling. Connor hummed in appreciation before taking another sip of the hot chocolate. His tail thumped against the floor.
The atmosphere of the room was soft and cozy as everyone enjoyed their drinks, the sweetness of the beverage warming their bodies and hearts.
Connor’s never really had a place to belong, until now. He couldn’t deny that the Syndicate had become like a family to him, welcoming him with open arms.
It may have been sudden and unexpected, but Connor had no regrets about agreeing to join them. He wouldn’t trade this place for anything in the world.
Connor felt a small weight settle on his lap and looked down to see Apollo lying there, watching him.
“Hi, buddy.” Connor cooed as Apollo licked his cheek affectionately. He giggled and ran his hand through the dog’s fur, scratching behind his ear.
Phil had begun to continue his story, with Ranboo interrupting every so often to ask questions that made Phil roll his eyes at him. But they were all getting along, laughing, and having fun together.
And Connor felt like he belonged there too. With them. Like he was finally a part of something bigger than himself.
